Now I do want to apologize beforehand because in my
excitement (or simple because of hunger) to eat the food as soon as possible, I
totally forgot to snap some pictures of our actual order. And yes, it was
definitely my tummy’s fault for clouding my mind at said time (damn you
tummy!). But I did take some photos around the Sabahan owned premise (which was
located right behind our hotel at Asia City )
so hopefully that will do for now. Then again, I did previously review their Centre Point branch so you guys can
check that out as well. Overall, our take away orders (which were the 2 pieces
Chicken Rice for my partner and some extra helping of Curly Fries and Criss-Cut
Fries for me since I’m in the mood to munch on them) were as good as I’ve
remembered them (or might be even better). Both of my fries based fast food
were generous in portion and not too salty (which was nice for a change) but
the latter was a tad too crispy (or burnt might be the right word) even for
someone who claims to like greasy, crispy things like me. Service was also
pretty prompt but a bit chaotic since there seems to be more customers than
seating area (due to the RMCO SOP of course).
Since me and my partner were at KK for a week recently (and
since we brought along our own vehicle) there are quite a number of KK reviews
that I’m going to post this time around so I do apologized beforehand should
I’ll probably bored you with my seemingly endless posts of KK (*insert finger heart emoji). And this
time around I decided to post my reviews alphabetically so I won’t missed out
on anything (yes… it’s an age-related thing).
Initially, we were at the Plaza 333 Kobusak Commercial
Centre (at Donggongon, Penampang) because we wanted to try out a different
eatery altogether but discovered that they have closed down for good (the
Covid-19 effect no doubt). So after going around the area for a few minutes, we
decided to try this place out solely due to their intriguing name. I mean, both
me and my partner were not exactly fans of bakso
so this was definitely a step up from us. We scanned their menu and were glad
to find that they do have other dishes that aren’t related to bakso at all (in fact, more than half of
them to be exact). So my partner decided to try out their Nasi Ayam Penyet
Mentega Telur Masin while I ordered their Nasi Uduk Ungu Ayam Penyet Mentega
Telur Masin simply because I was very curious to see its purple rice being
served. And since it was literally the same dish but with different types of
rice only, both of us came into a conclusion that the dishes were very tasty
indeed, especially the chicken. Granted, it was literally a dried butter
chicken dish but we do like that the butter compliments the chicken instead of
overwhelming them. We were very satisfied with our non-bakso dishes from this bakso
place (hehehe… see what I did there?).
After months of being stuck in one place due to the MCO (and
all other CO that comes along after that) I was just itching to get out of
Tawau for some personal R&R. So I’ve managed to persuade my partner to
accompany me to (where else) Kota Kinabalu for a week long getaway, as well as
contributing to the dwindling local tourism economy (wink wink). And because of the latter, we discovered that one of
big name hotels in KK seems to be having a below average promotion of sorts
during our desired dates hence we decided to ‘splurge’ a bit for this trip
(notice the oxymoron). The internationally known hotel chain is located at
Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, within the Asia
City area (and directly
facing the soon-to-be opened Holiday Inn Express). It is also situated right
beside a Chinese primary school (the SJK Chung Hwa Kota Kinabalu) so you can
expect a bit of a congestion during the weekdays within said area (as we’ve unfortunately
discovered).
As we decided to be in KK for a week, my partner decided to
drive there this time around and we were glad to discover that the hotel does
provide complimentary parking to in-house guests within the building (but not
the valet parkings right in front of the lobby). As it was quite a while since
both of us stayed in a swanky hotel such as Hilton KK, we were blown away by
the spacious lobby area and their amazing chandeliers (yes again, very jakun of us). Initially, we did not
expect much at check-in since we arrived at the hotel around noon (before their
official check in time) but was surprised to be told that we can check into our
room right away. Well, in retrospect I think it was because we checked in
during a weekday so not that many patrons were there yet (especially since
foreign tourists were still barred from coming into the country).
We booked their cheapest available room at that time but
were very satisfied with what we’ve gotten. The room was spacious and pleasing
to the eyes, with a comfy sofa and separate fully marbled sink, bathroom and
shower area (which I loved but also very cautious about due to my previous ''incident' at Le Meridien years ago). I
do like their free wifi service as well since it has a very wide coverage
(because me and my partner were lepaking
one time right behind the hotel and I can still get a decent wifi signal from
them). Overall, a very nice room indeed. But there are also some things that
the hotel might want to take note on. For one, we were given a room which was
literally right next to the swimming pool’s main door so you can imagine all
sorts of noises of people coming and going from said area (our room number is
1128 by the way). It would be much better if they could ask us beforehand for
our room preferences. Also since the hotel has a Clean Stay policy (where they
frequently sanitized the room) they do not readily provide basic toiletries
such as toothbrush, shower cap etc but you can give their housekeeping a call
for those things. And speaking of housekeeping, they also have another policy
where they will not make up your room unless requested. It is very good if you
wanted privacy but can be a bit of a nuisance to tell their reception staff
everyday to clean your room. And if you’re planning on cosying up inside your
room for the entire stay, their smart TV only has FOX Movies and AXN channels
that are entertainment related, as almost all other channels were of sports and
news (a very business oriented hotel indeed). But do check out their swimming
pool facilities as well though as their sun-beds were very comfortable and
relaxing to lounge lazily on (like I did on most evenings). The pool is of a decent
size and opens around 6am till 6pm (last call is at 5.45pm during the RMCO
period).
All in all…
Type – King Guest
Room
Room – 5/5 (simply
marvellous and still fairly brand new)
Price – 4/5 (we
were lucky to be there during a promotional period but their pricing can be a
bit hefty during normal times)
Service – 5/5 (as
expected from a major brand hotel chain, as the staff was well-trained &
courteous all the time)
Décor – 5/5 (a
very modern décor indeed – complete with an eye catching chandelier at the
lobby)
Facilities – 5/5
(it also has several ballrooms from what I can see, as there seems to be a
couple of events going on during our stay)
Location – 4/5 (my
only peeve during the stay, as they aren’t immediately attached to any major
malls. The nearest is Centre Point and that also requires a 10-15 minutes walk,
depending on which path you’re taking)
*Below are pictures of the main entrance & lobby area...
.... our bedroom & its amenities...
... and the swimming pool area plus the views visible from the 11th floor (where the pool is)
Oh and not forgetting their parking area (which are on the 1st till 8th floor if I'm not mistaken)

Formerly known as Authentic Cafe, this particular eatery had (for some reason) changed its name the
moment they moved to a new location (they are now within the ever evolving Kubota
Sentral commercial area, on the same row as Magic Station). It may be for a fresh start or simply because they
wanted to highlight their new signature dishes; the rumoured-to-be next
level spicy Nasi Ayam Geprek and Nasi Ayam Geprok (hence the name… I guess). People
that had tried out said dishes did commented that the spice level were indeed
above average (but does not reach the ‘killer’ level yet) so I never attempted
them myself (due to personal health reasons). So when me and my partner went
there several times (mostly during pre-MCO times – which also explains the slightly
‘outdated’ pictures below) we decided to try their other food that includes
their regular Nasi Ayam Penyet, Fried Mee Hoon and Nasi Payau Blackpepper. All
of the dishes were pretty good but nothing too outstanding I’m afraid. Admittedly,
they were usually our second (or in some cases third) choice for food since our
initial choices were either had closed for the day or had ran out of food (no
joke y’all… oddly enough that happen to us a few times when we dine in that
particular area).

D'bulan Tomyam Restoran
Labels: food, restaurant
My recent visit to this Kelantanese-Thai cuisine restaurant
made me realized that I’ve actually forgotten to post their earlier pictures
(pre-MCO) in this blog so… here they are! FYI, they’re located within the
(somewhat) newly developed Plaza Damai commercial area at (where else) Jalan
Damai.
The first time I went to the restaurant (again, that was during
pre-MCO times) I remembered it being very pleasant, with the waiters and food
being served promptly. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case when me and my
partner went there again fairly recently for our lunch. The waitress that
attended to us seems a bit err… ‘blur-ish’ and had totally forgotten my order
(but not my partner’s order so lucky him). We tried to call her after awhile to
ask about my order but she seems to be ignoring me (probably due to the growing
lunch crowd). The owner did a walk-around as well but had also missed our table
for some reason. Alas, my partner had to reordered my Nasi Kerabu Ayam
directly at the counter and only then my food was served. To be fair, the dish was pretty good but nothing noteworthy I’m afraid. My
partner was into their Sup Tulang so he ordered it both times we were there. It
was rather salty to me but my partner seems to like it nevertheless. So all I’m
saying is do avoid the place during peak hours as it can be hectic.
